In February 2023, the Organisation for Women Empowerment and Development (OWED) carried out an empowerment program that supported 25 internally displaced women, giving them the tools, knowledge, and resources they needed to rebuild their lives with dignity.
The program was carefully designed in four stages:
-
Training – The women received practical lessons in business creation and management, equipping them with skills to run and sustain small enterprises.
-
Provision of startup capital – Each woman was provided with financial support to put her business idea into action.
-
Business setup – OWED worked closely with them to establish their businesses, ensuring they had the right foundation to succeed.
-
Follow-up and mentorship – Continuous guidance was provided to monitor progress, strengthen capacity, and secure long-term growth.
This initiative went beyond financial support; it was about restoring hope, building confidence, and creating opportunities for women who had lost so much due to displacement. Today, many of these women are running small but thriving businesses that not only sustain their families but also contribute positively to their communities.
The project was made possible by the generous support of Vessel of Destiny, Yvonne Shiri, and Duala Jacob, in partnership with OWED. Their commitment is proof that when women are empowered, entire communities are transformed.
